Home Hearing Tests

Snippet of information for those wondering about the accuracy of home hearing tests

The National Acoustics Laboratory (NAL) have recently studied the headphone set-up with audiometers and have determined that you can get far better results when using foam insert headsets as opposed to the older style over-the-ear cups.

Insert headphones offer up to 40dB of noise attenuation meaning you can test in most houses even next to busy roads, although the audiologist should assess each location at the time of testing.

In-The-Mouth Hearing Aids!!!

Difficult to perceive but a new device called SoundBite has been developed to sit in the mouth and aid people with hearing loss!!

The SoundBite is placed onto the upper left or right molars and looks like a mini-brace (being custom made for each patient). The client still wears a mini-behind-ear device which picks up sounds; this then deciphers the sound adding in noise cancellation formulas and transmits the sound to the SoundBite which uses bone conduction to send the sound direct to the cochlear’s, bypassing the middle ear.

The SoundBite is developed by Sonitus, and is clearly an alternative solution for those with middle ear problems which cause conductive hearing losses (i.e. the inner ear is still working normally, or with mild inner ear loss only). So for those of you with age related hearing loss with damaged nerve endings this is not a solution. But for middle ear problems this could be a great alternative. Only time will tell if it is another gimmick in the hearing aid market!!
